Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) Services

Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is a serious eye condition that can affect premature infants, particularly those born with a low birth weight or at a young gestational age. According to guidelines from the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) and the Indian Society of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (ISPOS), screening for ROP is essential for babies who meet the following criteria:

  • Birth Weight: Infants weighing less than 2000 grams at birth.
  • Gestational Age: Infants born before 36 weeks of gestation.

Importance of Early Screening

ROP screening is typically conducted within the first month of life. As part of our commitment to neonatal eye health, Kamla Eye Clinic follows the slogan “Tees Din Roshni Ke” to emphasize the importance of timely ROP evaluation. This screening is crucial to determine whether a baby’s retina has developed sufficiently.

  1. Mature Retina: If the retina is mature, the baby is generally at low risk for visual impairment and can be discharged safely.
  2. Immature Retina or ROP: If the retina is immature or shows signs of ROP, immediate intervention is necessary. Delay in treatment can lead to significant vision loss and potentially lifelong blindness.

Risks of Untreated ROP

In advanced cases, untreated ROP can lead to severe vision impairment in one or both eyes. Early diagnosis and treatment are vital in preventing these adverse outcomes. At Kamla Eye Clinic, we are dedicated to providing comprehensive ROP screening and management, ensuring that at-risk infants receive the care they need promptly.

Commitment to Care

Our experienced team employs the latest techniques and guidelines in the management of ROP. We understand that the health of premature infants is critical, and we work closely with pediatricians and neonatologists to provide the best outcomes for these vulnerable patients. Our goal is to protect the vision of every child and provide parents with the reassurance they need during this crucial time.
